'Baggys Breaks 200 pounds.'

Today saw the second round of the F4W summer series 2007. Twenty one anglers attended with 5 appologies from anglers who could'nt make it on the day which would have made it the biggest ever turnout for a fish4wales match. Arriving in the car park at sylen at 8.30am as the lake had been pegged for 25 by the owner Terry on saturday night. Anglers quickly booked in, Tony Wale was there but had a frozen shoulder and decided not to take part today, travelling partner Steve Davies joked it was playing up because he had seen todays opposition and bailed out.

Pegs were drawn and the anglers all made their way to the lake, I had drawn peg 20 which was up on the island, along with Davy, Paul and Geoff Walker, oh how I love that long walk to the far end of Sylen - NOT. Terry really needs to put that road in to the island like promised.

I got to my peg, eventually (peg 20), I had an easy chuck with the feeder to the island, so i set that rod up first. I then plumbed around my swim and decided on two main lines, a pellet line at the drop off at 11mtrs and a paste line at the bttom of the 1st shelf at 5mtrs. i alosi plumbed another paste line 5mtrs down the inside to my left under a overhanging tree.

I fed these three swims with GOT 4mm feed at the start and then put the feeder out to the island. After a few missed bites I landed my first fish a nice skimmer, meanwhile Steve, Andy, Jim and Geoff had all landed carp, with Steve and Andy seeming to be having a few bites. Elsewhere it was fishing very hard, not suprising really considering with the match and pleasure anglers there were over 35 anglers on the banks with clear blue skies , bright sunshine and fairly clear water.

A switch to my 11mtr line and after trying a few different baits I managed to hit one of the bites, again another skimmer to add to the three I had caught on the feeder, so at this point I switched to the paste line, bites were slow but since i was getting interest on the paste I stuck with this eventually landing three carp the biggest being 6lb 8oz.

Reports kept filtering back that everyone was struggling and bites were both hard to come by and finicky. Brian not having the best of days had about 1lb odd in the net when he managed to hook and land a carp on the whistle putting him in contention for the biggest fish.

At the weigh-in the weights were a lot lower than i'd expected and by the time I came to weigh my own peg I knew I was in with a chance with 17lb being the best so far I had an idea it was going to be close. My net went on the scales coming up just short with 15lb 8oz but securing me 2nd place, with Geoff Walker and Paul only managing just over and under 8lb respectively which gave me back to back section wins and another sweet victory over Geoff and Brian. In addition to 2nd place and section I picked up biggest fish as well with a 6lb 8oz Mirror Carp.

After the match Brian's day was to get worse, as he continued to fish on for a bit. I was talking to Davy as I packed my kit away when I looked up when hearing a loud splash to see Brian diving over his box in pursuit of his top 8 which was sailing out towards the island. He made a lung for the pole slipping over the shelf while holding the pole and diving head first into the deeps his pole smapped in 3 places. I was laughing loudly as he entered the water, but a deathly silence came over Sylen with the loud crack of breaking carbon. After retriving the remaining bits of the pole, it became apparent he had a snapped no5 section and the remaining top 4 dissapeared out of sight into the depths.

A rather expensive £200 + bag and way to end the day, without any pick up or section win today, you could say a rather bad day at the office for Brian.

Thanks to all for the turn outs and making this years F4W matches such a great success.

Ok enough waffle, did i mention I beat Walker and Brian AGAIN, now the results.
